One of the ways a culture defines itself is through government communications. We interact with federally sponsored graphic design in the form of money, transportation, signage and nutrition and health labels, etc. My assignment is to design a series of four postage stamps that raise awareness for a particular cause. I was to exercise research skills, further develop conceptual thinking and will understand the importance of visual relationships, stylistic flexibility and continuity in designing for multiple items.

For the final composition, the 4 buttons needed to be 2.25″ in diameter and work as a set as well as individually. The topic I chose to raise awareness for was racism. Here are my buttons.

Part 2 of this assignment allowed me to use photoshop and illustrator to create my composition. Using the word light, I had to combine one or more images with the text and crop and isolate elements of the text
and image to bring focus to the form and message.

Text and image can be combined by a designer to create an effective and engaging message. Using juxtaposition and manipulation of the typography and imagery, meaning can be created or added. The resulting image/word combination becomes greater than the parts.

Here is my concept:

I hand-drew the word light into the shape of a flame and traced my work in illustrator. Then using photoshop, I created the illusion of the words being on fire and created a lighting effect.

For those of you that haven’t seen Step Brothers, the movie, you should defintely watch it, or look at the cover here. My roommate and I decided to make our card based on the DVD cover. There was no way we were going to find matching sweater vests like the ones seen on the cover, so some Photoshop would be needed. Below is the picture that we took in our apartment before I went to work in Photoshop and also the final product. Season’s Greetings.

As you are probably aware, Facebook upgraded user profiles with a new layout. With the new layout, the gray header has been removed from the background and pictures were added to the top portion of the page displaying the 5 most recent tagged photos of yourself. Before looking on the internet to see if anyone had already made some creative approach to their profile, I immediately thought of climbing up the wall. Of course, there were already people with the new profile tweeked to their own photos, but I decided I would create one anyway. Here is what I chose to do.

Probably going to do some more approaches, but I thought I would throw one up there since finals are over and I just got some free time. Heres the link to my profile: http://www.facebook.com/neil.a.savage.

I created a photoshop file that has the images cut out, so all you have to do is overlay this image on the picture want and crop the individual photos. Click here to download.

Open a new document with a width and height of 800 pixels, resolution 72.

Next, take a picture of the palm of your hand and import it into Photoshop.

Now, desaturate your photo using ctrl + shift + u or goto Image > Adjustments > Desaturate and set your blending layer to Linear Light.

Set the opacity of your clouds layer to 80% or to whichever allows the palm lines to show through.

Create a new Color Balance adjustment layer above the image of your palm. This can be done by clicking the black and white circle at the bottom of your layers palette.

Add an exposure adjustment layer above the other adjustment layer. Again, click on the black and white circle at the bottom of your layers palette.
