Graphic Design: Letterform Combinations

For this assignment, I needed to create an interesting form using my two initials, N and S. The letterforms could be uppercase or lowercase and a combination of both. Once I came up with a creative form, I then needed to use french curves to draw each letterform. Using black india ink, I created a solid composition of my initials. Below is my approach scanned in on illustration board. After the assignment, I recreated the composition is Illustrator and created my personal logo.

For this assignment, I needed to take a carpenter’s tool, musical instrument or kitchen tool and simply the form and create 4 variations:

Painterly: System of thick and thin strokes, calligraphic, closest to the original gestural expression.
Graphic/Geometric: System of uniformity in stroke or rectilinear in general, distinctively evolved from its brush stroke origin.
Radical: Extreme deviation or abstraction from the original form/gesture, bizarre.
Nirvana: Selection of best expression or form considering all the methodologies; possible hybridized form; form that feels right or best.

I chose to use a channel lock.

Zach Galifianakis Distortion Drawing Illustration

For my illustration class, I was assigned to take a photo of a celebrity, stretch his or her face vertically by 150% and draw the new photo. Here is the original photo as well as my drawing of Zach Galifianakis.

Drawing of “A Friend In Need” Cassius Marcellus Coolidge in Graphite

In my drawing observation and invention class, our final project was to create a drawing using graphite that demonstrated control of the medium. We could draw anything that we liked, but it had to bigger than 18″ x 24″. I chose to draw Cassius Marcellus Coolidge’s painting, “A Friend In Need” because of its dynamic composition. I thought the painting itself was interesting and would be a challenge to complete in graphite. Here is my drawing:

Food Drawing

In my drawing class, we were assigned to create a drawing of any kind of food to demonstrate texture. I chose an egg, because of its delicate form and the texture on the paper captured that nicely. I used graphite on medium weight drawing paper.

Drawing Observation: Copy an Artist’s Work

Our assignment was to choose a figurative work from a list of artists to copy. We were allowed to change the scale but the format needed to be proportionately accurate to the original. We could also use any medium. I chose Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks.” My final composition was 11″ x 8 1/2″ using graphite. Here is my version:

Digital Concepts: Fairytale Gone Awry

Our assignment was to design a billboard of a fairytale that has gone awry using only elements of our own (scanned it, hand drawn or photographed). 2D Process: Systematic Self Portrait

Assignment: Use the “Chuck Close Method” to create a self-portrait drawing/painting that combines representational and abstract elements. We were to develop a system of color, design, and mark making that reinterprets the self-portrait image through abstraction as well as continue to explore color interaction and the principles of organization.
